How to Make Tissue Paper Flowers

Tissue paper flowers are an inexpensive and cute alternative to fresh flowers. They are basically a miniature version of tissue poms. You can use them in centerpieces, to decorate a diaper cake, as napkin rings, a wrist corsage for the guest of honor, or to make a tissue flower pomander ball.

What you'll need:

  • Tissue paper- any size or color will work, we used 20x30 sheets to get the most flowers.
  • Floral wire or pipe cleaners
  • Scissors, ruler, and a pencil

How to Make Tissue Flowers

Stack four sheets of tissue paper neatly on top of each other. We cut ours into 10 x 5 in. rectangles. You can make your flowers bigger or smaller by adjusting the size of your rectangles. I used a ruler and pencil to mark the lines and then cut them out. If they are not all exact, it's OK.

Next, you will need to fold each rectangle like a fan or accordion. Start at one end and fold over about half an inch. Then, flip over and fold half an inch on the opposite side. Keep going back and forth until you reach the other side, making sure to keep the folds as even as you can.

Now, you will need to wrap your floral wire or pipe cleaner around the middle and twist together. Then, trim each end either rounded or pointed depending on the look you are going for. Ours are cut with a rounded edge (if you cut the ends at a point, they have more of a spiky appearance).

Starting at one side, gently pull the top layer of the tissue paper apart from the rest. Continue pulling the layers apart until they are all separated. Then, do the same thing with the opposite side.

Keep fluffing and separating until you have a nice full flower. When you are done it should look something like this:

Tissue Paper Flowers Ideas:

Hot glue a craft gem to the center of your flower to add a little sparkle.

If you are going to use them as napkin rings, simply twist the wire around your napkin.

If you are using them for centerpieces or diaper cakes, I recommend that you wrap the wire with floral tape first.

You can also make a wrist corsage for the guest of honor. Just twist the floral wire around her wrist.
