How to Make Diaper Cakes
Step by step instructions for a rolled diaper cake

boy diaper cake

We will show you step by step directions how to make  diaper cakes. This "rolled" style cake is very easy to make and we'll show you how to do it without using tape, so that the diapers are not damaged.

What you'll need: (for a 3 tier cake)

  • 60-65 diapers (size 1 or 2)

  • Small, clear rubber bands (ones used for hair, you can find them at a beauty supply store). Buy at least 75 in case a few break.

  • Assorted sized regular rubber bands- 4 med. sized and 2 large

  • Ribbon (enough to wrap around each tier of the cake)

  • Cake plate or stand (12" or 14", round)

  • 1 large bottle and 1 small bottle

  • Topper to put on the cake- curling ribbon, stuffed animal, flowers, shoes, rubber duck, etc.

How to Make Diaper Cakes Step by Step:

Lay a diaper flat on a hard surface. Starting at the waist (open end) tightly roll the diaper up. Put a clear rubber band around the middle to keep it in place. Do the same thing with the rest of your diapers.

Next, put the large bottle standing up in the middle of the cake plate. Put a medium sized rubber band around the bottle. Put a rolled up diaper in between the rubber band and the bottle. Keep going until you have a layer all the way around the bottle.

Now, you need to add another layer of diapers. Put another medium size rubber band around all of the diapers and fill in with another layer of diapers all the way around. Then, put a large rubber band around the outside of these two layers and add a third layer of diapers around the bottle. When you are done with the bottom tier it should look like this.

Now, you are ready to start on the second tier of the cake. Put a medium size rubber band around the part of the bottle that is sticking out of the top. Add a row of diapers in between the rubber band and the bottle just like you did for the bottom tier. Add another rubber band and repeat with the diapers. For the second tier, you will only have two layers of diapers around the bottle. Now your cake should look like this.

For the third tier, put your small bottle on top of the bottle in the middle of the cake. This will help to support the top layer of the cake. Put a rubber band around the small bottle and put a layer of diapers around the bottle.

Almost done! Now you can either wrap a piece of ribbon around the middle of each tier (to cover the rubber bands) or tie curling ribbon around the outside of each tier and cut the rubber band underneath.

You can decorate your diaper cake any way you want. Many people like to attach baby items (diaper rash ointment, bath products, clothes, rolled up washcloths or toys) to their cake.

How to Make Diaper Cakes with Receiving Blankets

You can also use receiving blankets to give your cake a smoother look. Just fold the blankets so they are the same height as the diapers. Wrap around the cake and secure with a safety pin.

Use a stuffed animal or toy as a cake topper. Flowers, baby shoes, and curling ribbon also work great. I also put a bib on the second tier.

Here are a few examples of different ways to decorate your diaper cake.
