Sally's Cake!
Baby Shoe Cake Topper:
This bit was pretty easy, I followed a template that I found online, colored the fondant the colors that I wanted and then tried very hard to make it look like a shoe! I stuffed the toes full of saran wrap so that they would keep the right shape. Then, I decorated the shoes with stitch marks and a tiny decal with the Baby's Name on it.
Bottom Layer Decorations:
Also very easy... First, I traced baby cookie cutters onto a piece of paper. Then, I figured out which colors I wanted and made and colored royal icing to match. I then used the 'color flow' technique to make the bottles, diaper shirts and strollers. (The bottles are by far my favorite!) Color flow is very simple. First outline the shape with thick icing using a piping bag, then use thinned out icing to fill in the center. Once the center is dried add the decorations on top using the remaining thick icing. Allow these to dry for as long as possible before attaching them to the cake. I attached them to the cake with the remaining royal icing.
Cake:
The cake itself was a chocolate cake, (The Mother's favorite!) I made the bottom tier square so that the royal icing decorations stayed on better. I first frosted the bottom tier with chocolate butter cream then covered the cake with marshmallow fondant tinted an orange color that matched the baby's nursery. (I make my own fondant, and color it myself so this step takes quite awhile!)
For the top tier, I made a small round cake to mirror the round cake board, and covered it first with chocolate butter cream and then with pink rolled fondant. I then took a pizza cutter and 'embossed' the fondant to look like a quilt.
Assembled Cake:
Unfortunately my Aunt and Cousin live 3 hours away, so I drove the cake there unassembled and assembled it on site. But I think it turned out pretty good! My Aunt and Uncle loved the cake and it matched the colors and theme of the shower very well...
I have more Pictures on my blog... Cakengineer, thanks for letting me enter this contest!
